Library Stakeholder Report
Jennifer Weeks, County Librarian
Time for Summer Reading Fun!
Adventure Begins at Your Library as
Summer Reading 2024 kicks off on Saturday,
June 1. We have even more events than
normal at our libraries, with guest speakers,
special storytimes and fun arts and crafts for
all ages to take part in. Look for details in this
month’s events calendar and our website,
which lists events for kids, teens and adults.
All ages are encouraged to take part in the Summer Reading challenge on Beanstack from June
through July with prizes awarded in August. Our librarians have compiled suggested reading lists for
kids, teens and adults to get you started. Choose your own adventure based on what interests you.
In addition to providing food for the soul, we are also offering free lunch meals for kids ages 0 to 18 at
our two South County libraries starting on Monday, June 10. Every weekday (excluding holidays) until
August 9 (Morgan Hill) and August 16 (Gilroy), kids can enjoy nutritious meals as part of our Lunch at
the Library program, while supplies last. Lunch at the Library is a project of the California State Library,
supported with funds from the State of California, in partnership with the local YMCA.
Marking June with Pride
June is the month that we celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride in
recognition of the Stonewall Rebellion of 1968, considered
to be a key watershed event in the fight for equality. Local
celebrations take place all summer long across the globe,
with San Francisco Pride on June 30, Silicon Valley
Pride on August 25, and Oakland Pride on September 8.
Our libraries have a variety of event offerings around Pride Month, starting with a Kick-off Party at Gilroy
Library on Friday, May 31. Join book discussions on Tuesday, June 4 at Saratoga Library (Sci-Fi &
Fantasy Book Club), Tuesday, June 11 at Woodland Library, and Tuesday, June 25 at Los Altos
Library. Cupertino Library has a late morning Pride Dance Party on Sunday, June 9 with crafts. Morgan
Hill Library is screening the teen coming of age dramedy Love, Simon (PG-13) on Tuesday, June 11.
We are pleased to welcome former Santa Clara Supervisor Ken Yeager to the Campbell Express Library
on Monday, June 24 for a talk about his journey from being an activist for LGBTQ+ equality to running
and serving in elected office. We also have two online events- an intergenerational LGBTQ+ Speakers
Bureau Panel on Thursday, June 20 and a survey of gender-fluid and ambiguously gendered
depictions in Asian art across history on Tuesday, June 25. Register to receive the Zoom links.

Teen Bookmark, Photo Contest
Young photographers ages 12 to 18 are invited to capture their adventures and show off their photo
skills by submitting an entry to the first ever SCCLD Teen Photo Contest, which runs from June 1
through July 31. All original photography is welcome. Winners will be displayed on SCCLD’s website
and at our libraries and may be reproduced for public distribution.
We are also offering our Teen Bookmark Art Contest, where budding artists ages 12 to 18 are invited
to submit original bookmark designs using this year’s Summer Reading Theme, “Adventure Begins at
Your Library.” This also runs through July 31, with winning designs printed and given out at our libraries.
The artists will also be recognized for their work. Find details and prior examples on our website.
Juneteenth Celebrates Freedom
Dating back to 1865 and the official end of slavery in
all parts of the continental U.S. following the Civil
War, Juneteenth is an annual commemoration that
has grown in recognition across the country in recent
years. The County of Santa Clara first recognized it
as an official local holiday in 2020.
Our libraries, which will be closed on Wednesday, June 19 in observation of Juneteenth, have related
events planned this month. Morgan Hill Library will host a book discussion about Ralph Ellison’s
posthumously released Juneteenth on Wednesday, June 5. Cupertino Library has a quilting crafts
event for kids 5+ on Monday, June 10 that includes a history lesson about Juneteenth. Also look for a
blog post on our website about the holiday, including suggested readings to learn more.
FYI- All SCCLD Libraries will be closed on Wednesday, June 19
for Juneteenth. Our Online Library is available 24/7 at sccld.org

Father’s Day, Graduation Season
June is known for many things, including being the
month for “dads and grads.” Fathers and father
figures are the focus on Sunday, June 16. For those
looking to do something special, we have plenty of
ideas, including a recent collection of barbecuing
cookbooks. Is dad following the NBA playoffs? The
Finals are coming up soon. Check out our selection
of books, videos and video games around the sport.
Thousands of local students have just, or are about to, graduate from high school or college. Many of
them started school during the era of COVID and had to cope with the additional pressures of remote
virtual learning. For those looking to embark on the career track, we offer a number of resources in our
online Career and Jobs Skills page. This includes LinkedIn Learning for Libraries, which offers self-
paced learning courses in a variety of professional skillset subject areas. Find out about which careers
are the best fit for you in terms of compensation and working conditions with the Occupational Outlook
Handbook. Looking to take a gap year and explore the world? Rosetta Stone can help you learn a new
language. We also offer several services that help with resume writing, including Brainfuse JobNow.
