ROLL CALL Present: Biswari, Chen, Cheung, Garg, Gupta, Hu, Kumar, Mukherjee, Shah. Absent: none Staff: Sonya Lee, Robert Kaufman, Christina Lopez. CEREMONIAL MATTERS & PRESENTATIONS 1. Subject: 2023 Summer Programs Presentation Recommended Action: Receive a presentation on 2023 Summer Programs from Recreation Coordinator, Christina Lopez. Clarifying question from Commissioner: • What is Diwali? o Clarified as an Indian celebration festival hosted by Chamber of Commerce 2. Subject: 2023 Fall Window Painting Recommended Action: Receive a presentation on 2023 Fall Window Painting from Recreation Manager, Sonya Lee. Clarifying questions from Commissioners: • What is the theme? o Fall • Are school organizations YLO’s? o Yes • Can the window painting be a competition? o Not this time, but potentially in the future • Can Instagram posts be reposted? o Yes 7 Cupertino Teen Commission Minutes October 11, 2023 Comments: • Paska Markers would be best for window painting APPROVAL OF MINUTES 3. Subject: Approval of Minutes – September 13, 2023 Recommended Action: Review and approve the minutes from the Teen Commission meeting on September 13, 2023. Commissioners commented that attendance list and list of commissioners sworn in was incorrect. Commissioner Gupta motioned to approve minutes with corrections. Vice Chair Cheung seconded the motion. Minutes approved. The minutes were approved with a vote of 9 yes, 0 no, 0 abstained WRITTEN/ORAL COMMUNICATIONS No written or oral communications received. OLD BUSINESS No old business. NEW BUSINESS 4. Subject: New Youth Led Organization Highlight Program Recommended Action: Receive a presentation and provide feedback on the new Youth Led Organization process from Recreation Coordinator, Robert Kaufman. Clarifying questions from Commissioners: • Will the YLO design the post? o No • Will the YLO be added to City email lists? o Yes • Is this an on-going program? o Yes o Sonya Lee reviewed the history of the process. 5. Subject: Teen Resource Fair March 2024 8 Cupertino Teen Commission Minutes October 11, 2023 Recommended Action: Receive a presentation and provide feedback on the Teen Resource Fair in March 2024 from Recreation Coordinator, Robert Kaufman. Clarifying questions from Commissioners: • Where will the event be at Main Street? o The main lawn by the coffee shop. • Can we promote internships at the resource fair? o We will promote internships only if we had a resource for them. • Can we have free snacks at the event? o Undecided at this time due to budget issues. We will potentially establish agreements with the Main Street businesses for discounts on food. • Do we have booth partners yet? o No • For college and career resources what kind of partners will we reach out to? o College prep and tutoring companies • Will Teen Commission have a table? o Potentially yes Comments: • College and career resources are important. • Reach out to people who have recently graduated to share their experience with certain majors, careers, or schools. • Consider Monta Vista Art Boosters to help with an art component. • Art can be a mental health break for teens. • Flex College tutoring may be a good resource. • Focus on summer programs. • Other topics that are important: o Tutoring opportunities o Year-round volunteering opportunities o Working with animals o Simply shelters o Cupertino library STAFF & COMMISSION REPORTS • Staff Updates o Staff Report Recreation Coordinator, Robert Kaufman gave a staff report. • Commissioner Updates – None 9 Cupertino Teen Commission Minutes October 11, 2023 COMMISSIONER ATTENDANCE AT UPCOMING MEETINGS AND EVENTS • Currently the Mayor’s Meeting is held at the same time as the Teen Commission.
