to he used in preparing the monthly report.

include a "Future Programs" section within the
report.
Commissioner Schweitzerhof requested a list of all
instructors and leaders be prepared for the Commis-
sioners. The Director stated this would be done.

Director presented the exis',ing structure.

7.2 Acting Chairman Gabriel explained the Commiss-;on's

architect for design of this park. He explained the

The Director stated lie has talked with the Cupertino
Jaycees concerning the purchase of playground equipment
for this area which would aide in development costs.

The general feeling of the Commission was that a need
exists in this area for a park due to geographic
location and that plans ::houlr! proceed as recommended
by the City Counci,.
Acting Chairman Gabriel. reviewed the acquisition and
development of all Cupertino parks at this time.
Commissioner Schweitzerhof asked if a "Census of
Utilization" had been taken at Portal or Wilson Park.
The hector stated attendance .figures are now being
recorded. No "Census of Utilization" now exists, but
this will be reported on at the next meeting.

Rr PORT ON CURRENT PROJECTS OF DEPARTMENT
8.1 The Director gave a report on the Teenage Work Pro-
gram proposed by the City Council for this summer.
In confiring with the Public Works Director, it was
felt a total of 15 teenagers could be hired on a
40 hour week or 30 on a r hour week. These would be
high schlool. ,youths, with a minimum usage paid for
salary. Most jobs would include maintenance at
existing parks, worn with street crews, median work,
construction at Linda Vista, sigrl painting, traffic
count, picking fruit, ball field maintenance, or
possibly with bike trails program. I.n cooperation
with the Fremont Unton Hi_gn School District, a
free twin program ;night be coordinated within the
program.
Comm ::=ioner Ichweitzerhof s�.,ggested program gap for
1?-16 year olds, particularly a sofi ball program.
Phe Director reported on 'he slimmer teen programs
planned at Cupertino High Sc'.-=ool, Monta Vista Nigh
,Sschool, and t'.,e sn,__cialized programs at, the Y.M.C.A.
and other locations.

said this would be prepared for the next

vlilson Park and felt the cur .rent situation at this
area has improved. More patroling- by the :sheriff's
Department would continue to be helpful.

'l'he P ir. ec.tor reported on the forthcoming De Anza
Day (June 6) and t ae part the department will be
playing in this celebration. Exhiritr by the
various classes, as well as production numbers from
the ballet class, baton class, and childrenis
theatre will be held on the .library steps from
-I1:00 P.M.

The Director reported on the forthco.-Ang Collins
Jr. High School Teen. Trip to .pan Francisco to be
held June 5.

The Director reported or. the status of the summer.
program. It should be available from the printer
in two weeks. A listing of all classes was pre-
sented to the Commissioners.

The Director reported that the Parks and Recreation
Department offices have been freshly painted and
encouraged all to stop by, meet the full-time staff
and look around.

I Acting Chairman Gabriel asked tye Director his feelings
on the current Recreation Program as it compared to
other cities. The Director stated the Department has
ail excellent program in progress and need take a back
seat to no one. if a weariness exists it may be in the
area of sports and aquatics. Currently the Fremont
onion Nigh School District corers the aquatics progran<
.for the residents. A close observation and program
1 increase in me sports areas will be made.
Commissioner rynokas complimented the Children's Theatre
staff for an excellent performance of "Yankee Doodle
Comes To Town".
NEW BUSINESS
Le;ac-; Q. Report on "Legacy of Parks" Letter of Intent for
of Parks Federal funding
The Director reviewed the "Legacy of Parks" letter of
intent as submitted for HUD federal funding assistance
under the Open Space Land Program. Tihe request was
f'or $90,000 to match city funds. This will provide
minimum development at Stevens Creek, Monta Vista, and
Stokes/Somerset Parks
The Director stated funds would be available July 1
of this year if approved. The letter was c?bmitted
;prior to April 30 by the City Manager and the t,8ayor.
Acting Chairman Gabriel asked if the City would still
set aside $-)0,000 matching funds for park development if
grant is disapproved. The Director stated he had not
asked this question of the City Manager, however
presumed this may be possible.
10. Report. on Capital Improvements Request
Capital The Director reported on a request by the City Manager
Improve- for a five year. Capital Improvements priority list. He
menus presented a report prepared by former Parks and. Recreation
Director John Parham and requested the Commissioners
take it (some for review. He also stated that further
discussion on this ii-.ern could be held at the commissioner-
-staff city tour and a report be made at the next meeting.

Commissioner Schweitzerhof made a recommendation that the
Commission assist the Parks and Recreation Director in
"Planning for the Future" for the total program. He
suggested working with other youth groups in developing
total program for all level of youngsters in the Cupertino
census area.
Acting Chairman Gabriel asked guest, Sam Anzelmo, if the
Parks and Recreation Commission could assist the City
Goals Committee in any way. Mr. Anzelmo then explained
what this committee has been doing and trying to accomplish.

Commissioner Bybokas suggested. that the subccrnmittee
on Community Services be invited to discuss with the
Parks and Recreation Commission with regard to Parks
and Recreation goals.

12. Discussion of staff -commission tour of City facilities

commissioners a chance to visit developed and future
park sites and to meet the department staff'. A11

Recreation goals to determine where we are going,
which projects are important, etc.

Tile Director reported he had talked with tlne Public
Wori:s Director concerning diseased trees in the
Memorial Park orchard. Fie further stated that; many
may have to be removed.
Commissioner Schweitzerhof moves'. and Commissioner
McQuil_ien seconded the motion that the Parks arid
Recreation. Commission authorize the Director of
Parks and Recreation and the Public Works Director
proceed with what ever action is necessary concerning;
these trees wish an attempt to save as many as
possible.
