Rohra <KRohra@cupertino.org>; David Wang <DWang@cupertino.org>; Dana Ford <DFord@cupertino.org>; Rani Agrawal <RAgrawal@cupertino.org>; Carol Maa <CMaa@cupertino.org> Cc: Pamela Wu <PamelaW@cupertino.org>; Kirsten Squarcia <KirstenS@cupertino.org> Subject: Don't approve Kaleidoscope as public art Dear Arts and Culture Commissioners; Please don’t approve the proposed “art feature” of the kaleidoscope-on-a-pole to be part of the all-inclusive playground at Jollyman Park. Why? The kaleidoscope is *not* an art feature. It is just another interactive feature of the planned playground. You are signing a blank check — there’s no price tag, not even an estimate of the cost in this proposal. You as Art and Culture commissioners should not be allowing your limited funds to be appropriated for playground equipment. If the kaleidoscope is constructed as shown in the art image, there is nothing original about it; it is made using an ordinary metal light pole and other stock parts. Whatever the price tag, you’ll be overpaying for it just because it is so-called “art.” Finally, I have noticed that our city staff seems bent on filling our parks with with large, non-natural, non-park-like, unaesthetic features made of metal and concrete. (See plan for Memorial Park.) Don’t encourage this with your dollars!! Parks & Rec has their own budget. if they can’t afford this piece, too bad for them, and good for us. PLEASE INCLUDE THIS IN THE OFFICIAL RECORD. Regards, Caryl Gorska Retired Art Director
