FAC 09-27-2021 MINUTES FINE ARTS COMMISSION Monday, September 27, 2021 6:30 p.m. FINE ARTS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER At 6:31 p.m., Chair Kasamsetty called the meeting to order via virtual teleconference. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Sudha Kasamsetty, Diana Matley, Janki Chokshi, Esha Rao, Commissioners Absent: Satish Tare Staff Present: Joanne Magrini, Kelsey Christian CEREMONIAL MATTERS AND PRESENTATIONS 1. Subject: Senior Strategy Survey Recommended Action: Receive a presentation on encouraging community input in a survey assessing resource awareness and need among seniors for the Senior Strategy City Work Program item. Commission received presentation from Joanne Magrini, Director of Parks and Recreation APPROVAL OF MINUTES 2. Subject: Approve the May 24 Fine Arts Commission Minutes Recommended Action: Approve the May 24 Fine Arts Commission minutes Chair Kasamsetty motioned to approve the minutes. Commissioner Chokshi seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. POSTPONEMENTS None ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS None OLD BUSINESS 3. Subject: Art Talks for the Community Recommended Action: Review the Art Talk Series and discuss and finalize the topic for the November Art Talk. Chair Kasamsetty suggested that the next Art Talk topic be about bringing visual and performing arts together. Commissioner Choksi agreed that performing arts should be the next Art Talk topic. Commissioner Matley also agreed that performing arts would be a good Art Talk topic. Commissioner Rao said that she would like to see a non-traditional art form as a future Art Talk topic but was okay with performing arts as the November topic. Special meeting will be held to finalize speakers for the November Art Talk. 4. Subject: Distinguished, Emerging, and Young Artist Award Programs Recommended Action: Receive an update on current submittals, marketing, and outreach efforts for the Distinguished, Emerging, and Young Artist award programs. Commission received update on award programs. Commissioner Chokshi informed the commission that she has distributed the award program information to the Fine Arts League of Cupertino (FALC) and to the Art Summit. She also made an announcement at the Silicon Valley Day n Night Fun Fest. Commissioner Matley has sent the information to the Hongyun Art school in Cupertino. NEW BUSINESS 5. Subject: Update on the City Work Program Recommended Action: Receive an update on the Fiscal Year 2020-21 and Fiscal Year 2021-22 City Work Program Items Commission received update on the status of the Fiscal Year 2020-21 and FY 2021-22 City Work Program items. 6. Subject: Art in Unexpected Places Recommended Action: Discuss and finalize the Art in Unexpected Places Program, including timeline, criteria, and description. Staff presented the Art in Unexpected Places plan to the commission. Commissioner Matley motioned to approve the plan as presented. Commissioner Rao seconded the motion. Motion carried unanimously. 7. Subject: Response to the Mayor Regarding Potential Use of Discretionary Funds by Commissions Recommended Action: Discuss and provide a response to the Mayor regarding potential use of their discretionary funds by Commissions Chair Kasamsetty suggested that the commission work with the Teen Commission to create COVID-19 guideline posters for the elementary schools. The other commissioners agreed that creating posters was a good idea. Chair Kasamsetty suggested that she and Commissioner Chokshi work together on the project as a subcommittee and bring the topic to the next Teen Commission meeting. Chair Kasamsetty motioned that the discretionary funds be used to created COVID-19 guideline posters for the Cupertino elementary schools and work as a sub-committee with Commissioner Chokshi on the project. Commissioner Chokshi seconded the motion. Motion carried unanimously. STAFF AND COMMISSION REPORTS 8. Subject: Monthly Update Reports Recommended Action: Receive an update report from the Fine Arts Commission staff liaison and commissioners. Chair Kasamsetty attended the Silicon Valley Day n Night Fun Festival. Commissioner Chokshi attended the Silicon Valley Day n Night Fun Festival. Commissioner Rao attended the Silicon Valley Day n Night Fun Festival. Commissioner Matley reported that the August Mayor’s meeting that she was to attend had been canceled. Staff reported that the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival was returning to Memorial Park and would be performing October 2, 3, 8, 9, 10. The festival was asking for volunteers to help greet the audience. Staff reported that the library has four walls that are approximately 18’ long by 3’5” high that the commission can curate. COMMISSION ATTENDANCE AT UPCOMING MEETINGS AND EVENTS Commissioners discussed attendance for the upcoming Mayor’s meetings. Attendance will be as follows: October 13- Commissioner Tare November 10- Commissioner Rao December 8- Chair Kasamsetty FUTURE AGENDA SETTING The staff liaison reviewed the tentative agenda for the November 22 meeting.
