Hello Cupertino Parks and Rec Commissioners,
I'm writing to you today ahead of your meeting scheduled for June 1st. Given that there's a possibility that
you will discuss the Memorial Park plan survey, this 60+ year Cupertino resident would like to add some
thoughts on the project.
I understand that there are increasing numbers of advocates for DOLA's in Cupertino. A number of
advocates have expressed interest in some baseball/softball field areas in Cupertino, particularly those
with existing fencing.
My concern is that such advocacy may contribute to the removal of the softball field at Memorial Park. A
mistake, in my opinion. Those who use the field may not be as vocal, plus the field has potential for more
softball use than it has today. We can all agree that it is currently underutilized. Maybe the current city
budget issues will have all departments looking for new sources of income. Rent out the field for more
games/activities. With the existing lights, spring/summer/fall games/activities can easily be enjoyed
beyond daylight hours. The lights are a desirable amenity that once removed, may be near impossible to
replace. Between CEQA, the NIMBY mindset and our natural tendencies to resist change, adding that
quality of lighting anywhere within our city limits is an uphill battle in the best case scenario. Look no
further than our own Monta Vista High School. Opened in 1969 without lights, when I was a mere 10
years old. Lights weren't installed until after both my daughters had graduated, a mere 10 years ago.
Please convince our City Council members to keep Memorial Park softball field and lights.
Thanks for your time,
Harlan Jackson
