Good evening, Chair Scharf, Vice Chair Madhdhipatla, Commissioner Kapil, Commissioner Saxena, and Commissioner
Wang,
You inhabit a special time in history. 2022.
On June 7, 2022, the Cupertino City Council issued two proclamations, that I have attached below.
- We are focused and energized by proclamations for the symbolic power of their words.
- We are focused and energized at the raising of the PRIDE Flag for its symbolic power.
- Symbols are important. It is how these symbols move us to action that gives meaning to our lives.
Cupertino has before it an immediate and great opportunity for taking action to support these
proclamations. How?
- By planning for homes to house people of all incomes and abilities in safe and decent housing.
- By planning for housing that will show Cupertino's commitment to Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH)
goals.
- By planning for 4,588 (plus a buffer) homes to be built in the next eight years.
You ask me, “why do you care?”
I am a 34 year resident of Cupertino. An unlikely person to be here. Born in Nebraska. Reared in small desert
towns of Arizona and California. Reared by parents whose youth was stolen by poverty. Lucky to live in a beautiful
city like Cupertino. Moved to demand a fair system for all people.
Read these proclamations again. Watch the PRIDE Flag raising again. Look at the photos attached below that the
City Council has distributed to the public to show their commitment. Take in what that means for our community.
What can you do?
At the next Planning Commission meeting that discusses the Housing Element, do these three things:
1. — Expand the number of sites being considered!
2. — Reject the sites that would kick hundreds of people out of their existing homes!
3. — Write land use policies that make it possible to build multi-family housing!
These are all within your authority as an advisory body to the City Council. By its proclamations and by its
published photos, the City Council shows us that it is waiting to discuss a Housing Element that plans homes for all
our residents.
What can you do as the Housing Commission? Establish the plan that meets the housing goals for Cupertino’s
Housing Element!
Begin tonight to enable homes that will meet our city's Housing Element goals, and, more importantly, that will
meet the needs of all residents of Cupertino. Re-read the Council's proclamations. Ponder the words. You inhabit
a special time in history. Dig deep. Do the right thing.
