Subject: Comment to Cupertino Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on
April 6, 2023
Dear members of Parks and Recreation Commission,
We are residents of Cupertino, living across the street from the tennis courts of Memorial Park
for the past 40 plus years since 1979.
To our surprise, earlier this year, one of the tennis courts (just happened right across from our
house, less than 100 feet away) had been converted to 4 pickleball courts.
As you may know, the game of pickleball is rather very noisy compared to tennis. The noises
are from the wooden paddle and the balls. Furthermore, when the courts are played as
doubles, there are 16 plus players with constant screaming and yelling when games get
exciting. I am sure the pickleball games also cause disturbance to the neighboring tennis
courts.
We have to bear the pain of hearing those constant noises all day long until the lights of the
courts are out at 10:00 PM.
These noises from the pickleball game are substantially impacting our quiet and peaceful
enjoyment of our home and life. The “firecracker” noises prevent us from taking our daily
afternoon naps, which are vital to the well-being of us senior citizens.
This email serves as a notice of our concern of the matter to the committee, and we are
grateful for your attention.
Sincerely yours,
David Chang

Meeting Minutes

Hello,
I noticed the following in minutes for last commission meeting attributed to me:
“ ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
San R. supported extending the current DOLA trials, fenced areas, and DOLAs at large parks.”
These comments are incorrect. I have not supported extending DOLA trials.
My feedback has been and continues to be:
1. Do not implement DOLA in small parks like Monta Vista Park. It is too small.
2. DOLA trials cannot be conducted in winter as the usual park patrons are not at the parks due to rains and cold
weather. Any DOLA trial during those months don’t reflect regular park occupancy and impacts.
3. Consider DOLA for large parks like Creekside or Portal Park not for small parks like Monta Vista Park.
4. Only allow DOLA within a fenced area.
5. DOLA must be away from walkways, tennis courts and must not interfere with regular patrons.
6. Do not allow DOLA in non-DOLA parks.
7. Please have code enforcement at parks during the evening hours to monitor and enforce especially at small parks
with reported violations like Monta Vista Park.
Thank you for correcting the minutes accordingly.
Thanks,
Santosh Rao

Dear Parks and Rec Commission,
In light of the recent revelation that the city’s future revenue will be reduced due to significantly less
sales tax and also pending audit results, I am asking you to POSTPONE your decision on Community
Funding Grants.
The total funding for the Parks and Rec programs need to be prioritized to ensure that they benefit
the most number of residents, young and old. If you decide on these grants tonight, will the overall
pot of money allocated to Parks and Rec be reduced by the total amount of these grants?
The well attended and multi-generational, multi-racial, multi-everything program called Shakespeare
in the Park has been notified that they may not have funding. Please spend time to priorities all the
Parks and Rec programs so that the City and it’s residents get the biggest bang for the fewer dollars
allocated.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Peggy Griffin
